The Quality Engineer II will utilize engineering fundamentals as well as the knowledge from real-world field experience to ensure the quality of all Black Diamond Equipment climbing/skiing product and;
  1. Assists in the creation of testing models for analysis of new product and current production raw materials, materials in process, and finished products
  2. Performs the necessary inspection and testing of raw materials, materials in process, and finished products for new product introduction.
  3. During the design and development of new product, conducts statistical and graphical analysis of test data and determines product and component strength ratings while taking into consideration typical use, miss-use and abuse scenarios
  4. Assists in the design and fabrication of test fixtures for real world assimilation as well as repeatability as it pertains to new product development and introduction.
  5. Provides technical support and product-user insight and feedback
  6. Maintains quality records systems for test, design, and product rating documents.
  7. Helps to drive investigations, as necessary, as it pertains to current product proposed design changes, material qualifications or manufacturing investigations.

 QualificationsEducation:

  • Required: Bachelors degree in engineering (Mechanical, Industrial or Materials Science)
  • Preferred: Bachelors degree in one of above with advanced coursework in statistical analysis and project work including manufacturing, process control and quality assurance.
Work Experience:
  • Required: Two to five years engineering experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Preferred: Two to five years engineering experience in a quality capacity for highly technical consumer goods. Experience with materials testing, statistical analysis, root cause analysis, process validation, measurement methods and working with inspectors.
Skills & General Experience:Required:
  • General knowledge of strength of materials, statistics, data acquisition systems, and failure analysis.
  • General database, word processing, 3D modeling, controls software, and spreadsheet knowledge.
  • Ability to read and implement technical procedures and government regulations.
  • Ability to design test fixtures and relevant test procedures.
  • Ability to collect and present data, identify trends, and make written & verbal reports on conclusions.
  • Ability to troubleshoot, repair, and maintain both mechanical and electronics based testing equipment.
  • Must have an advanced working users knowledge of climbing and climbing gear, skis and skiing gear and possess demonstrated ability to field test gear and provide immediate feedback. Must be an active Climber and Backcountry Skier.
Preferred:All of the above plus: Experience with ISO 9001. Experience traveling to and working at overseas factories.Alternative qualification: Two to five years experience in quantity engineering.
Essential Functions:Responsible and authorized to continuously improve upon and perform the following functions in accordance with BDs Quality System, Safety and Employee Policy procedures and policies:
  1. Review and asses supplier processes to identify Root Causes and suggest & measure effectiveness of mitigations.
  2. Provide periodic reports on supplier performance to Quality Management and Suppliers.
  3. Design, perform and investigate raw material, work-in-process and final batch tests.
  4. Member of design team for new product introduction responsible for creation, delivery and execution of the Quality Plan and User Risk Assessment.
  5. Conduct analysis of test data; prepare written and verbal reports of analysis and distribute as required; prepare written reports discussing unusual test results and have the ability to suggest appropriate action items.
  6. Create and maintain testing instructions, test equipment operating instructions and inspection documentation.
  7. Assists in investigations, as necessary, as it pertains to current product Severity, Frequency and Detection and implement proposed design changes, material qualifications, or manufacturing investigations.
  8. Support Supply Chain, R&D and Suppliers in ensuring consistently conforming products for our customers.
Physical Requirements:
  • General physical requirements: Light work; occasional Medium to Heavy work. Some overseas travel to OEM factories may be required.
  • Visual acuity requirements: Close vision, Color Vision, Peripheral vision, Depth perception, Ability to adjust focus.
  • Motion and sensory requirements: Climbing, Balancing, Stooping, Reaching, Standing, Walking, Pulling, Lifting, Typing, Grasping, Feeling, And Talking.
  • Physical working conditions: Oils, inside atmosphere, Hazards.
