Job Description & Requirements

The Product Engineer is primarily responsible for the design and creation of products and their associated manufacturing processes. They coordinate with the Product Design Group (PDG) to turn ideas into manufacturable and marketable products based on approved criteria. Thorough and effective communication is key for this role to be effective.

Ideation

  • Brainstorm product ideas and criteria helping the PDG create a product plan that lines up with the company’s strategic goals.
  • Create effective rough designs for product ideas using sketches and CAD.
  • Work with the PDG to develop product proposals for management approval.
  • Analyze feasibility, cost, and manufacturability for product ideas.
  • Compile any testing standards that would need to be considered during development.

Development/ Design

  • Set, maintain and meet development objectives and timelines for all phases of development.
  • Create, utilize and update tools that organize and communicates each development project.
  • Design according to predetermined criteria, manufacturing techniques and aesthetics.
  • Create full product designs and specifications using computer software modeling techniques.
  • Create proof of concept prototypes leveraging outside vendors and appropriate methods.
  • Develop relationships with external sources that aid the product development process.
  • Work with PDG to determine future parallel products and the relevance those have to the design and product release.
  • Conduct realistic static and dynamic FEA analysis where appropriate.
  • Assist PDG in making adjustments to product scope as necessary during development process.
  • Work with manufacturing partners to decide on appropriate materials and production processes for each application and design products accordingly.
  • Develop and implement testing procedures to ensure final product and quality meets requirements.
  • Create technical drawings in accordance to standard dimensioning and tolerances.
  • Ensure completeness of product design, sub-component drawings, testing and manufacturing approval to meet requirements outline in product scope including cost and time factors.

Production

  • Assist PDG in the development of BOM’s and SOP’s for timely and accurate production.
  • Work with partners to set up quality benchmarks for production.
  • Coordinate with PDG, manufacturing partners and Procurement Buyer to monitor pre and post production.
  • Identify and develop solutions for any product quality concerns that may arise.
  • Support the creation of product documents such as manuals, tech bulletins, user guides, etc.

Other

  • Ensure confidentiality of all product information for the company.
  • Research advanced technology, materials, design concepts and processes to support new project requirements.
  • Develop, implement and maintain an engineering change management structure.
  • Drive for the continuous improvement of our engineering process.
  • Seek out more efficient and effective ways to help drive the company forward from within your department. Make suggestions if outside your department.
  • Understand the needs of other departments to proactively improve personal area of responsibility.
