Title: Lead River Manager

Status: Full Time Seasonal, April 15-November 1; or Full Time Super Seasonal; or Full Time Year Round, DOE

FLSA: Non-Exempt, Hourly/Day Rate

Wage: DOE, Hourly, Day Rate, Suggested Range $22.50 - $40/hr, Overtime + Incentives

Job Summary: 

Managing river operations - including supporting river managers, and river guides for Glacier Guides and Montana Raft on the Middle Fork and North Fork Flathead River.

The primary goals of the River Manager are:

  • To ensure a safe physical environment for guests and employees, with a constant eye for risk management;

  • To foster a supportive work environment for employees, with a constant eye towards creating an atmosphere of positive morale;

  • To manage and schedule the daily and seasonal logistics involved in river operations, i.e. assistant managers, guides, support staff, bus drivers, trips, and equipment;

  • To maintain, repair, inventory, and order equipment in an organized fashion.  We use Hyside rafts. 

  • To constantly review reservations and rosters and to maintain guide schedules in order to communicate reservation availability with the office.

Job Relationships: 

  • This position reports directly to the company’s Leadership Team, i.e. owners, managers, and other key stakeholders. 

  • This position supervises: river managers, river guides, fishing trips and shuttles, bus drivers, and support staff.


Job Specifications:

  • Education: High school diploma is required.

  • Experience: required.

  • Passion for the Flathead River System, Glacier National Park, Glacier Guides and Montana Raft, and the symbiotic relationship between them.

  • Understanding of the established Glacier Guides and Montana Raft brand, and the dedication required to both preserve and to further it.

  • Capability for independent work and also to work as part of a team.

  • Established or growing leadership skills.

  • Enthusiasm for organization, including the ability to prioritize tasks.

  • Acceptable information regarding criminal history background. (Post offer – Pre hire) 

  • ??Ability to drive. Must possess a valid driver’s license. Must be able to be added to the company’s vehicle insurance policy. Preferred: CDL, trailer backing skills. Training available.

  • Maintain a professional and neat appearance.

  • Ability to work with Hiking, Biking, Equipment Rentals, Lodging, and Kitchen Departments.

  • Assists with updating Risk Management Plan as needed.

  • Manage River Operations by being present and active in the Boat House, Life Jacket Room, bus lane, etc.

  • Maintain a clean and organized work space for all.

  • Knowledge of knots and boat patching is a plus!

  • Pre-season and post-season preparation for River Operations success, i.e. preparing equipment, schedules, training and hiring.

  • Will work closely with Communications Lead and Office Staff to share river information with staff and the public. 

  • During season, scheduling River Operations staff and equipment on half day, full day, and multi-day rafting trips. Will work closely with Reservations Manager, Logistics Manager, and office staff.

  • Will assist in furthering the company’s environmental efforts on a daily basis, and also in coordinating major company events that are part of this effort, such as Rafting for Refuse, Pints for Paths, and Gateway to Glacier Trail, US Highway 2 cleanups.

  • At times, coordination with government agencies such as the National Park Service, the Forest Service, Flathead Sheriff's Department, BNSF, Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks.

  • Ability to plan and implement a budget for River Operations and to report on the same.

  • Ability to guide a raft through class 3 +, 4 , rapids.

Job Schedule:

  • During rafting season: day shift, to include some evenings, holidays, weekends.

  • Flexible schedule available during off season.

  • Must be willing to raft the whitewater section of the Middle Fork Flathead river at least once weekly in order to properly lead daily de-briefings, safety talks, and other aspects of Lead River Manager communications

  • Willingness to attend some off-season meetings and trainings, such as the yearly America Outdoors Conference in December.


Work Location: 

  • One location, This position is based out of Glacier Guides and Montana Raft’s main office at 11970 Highway 2 East, West Glacier, Montana.

Work Environment:

  • Moderate physical activity required by handling objects up to 20 pounds frequently and up to 100 pounds occasionally.

  • Able to be seated at a desk and computer work station for extended periods of time daily.

  • Ability to stand for hours at a time.

  • Ability to walk, tour and inspect properties, river access points, campsites, as necessary.

  • Requires individual to bend, stoop, and stretch repeatedly.

  • Ability to work under varying weather conditions, sometimes extreme in nature.

  • Must be able to participate in rafting activities.

  • Job will require working weekends, holidays, and evenings during peak demand times.

  • Non-smoking, non-vaping environment.
