Job Summary
Recreational Sports is seeking a Climbing and Challenge Course Coordinator. This is a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, professional faculty position.

The Department of Recreational Sports is a unit of the Division of Student Affairs that is committed to equalizing student success. The Climbing and Challenge Course Coordinator provides leadership, coordination development, and instruction for the department’s climbing facilities, challenge course facility, and instruction and support of programming within Recreational Sports Adventure Leadership Institute (ALI).

This position is integral to the expansion of networks in the OSU community, to develop partnerships that advance professional development and teambuilding initiatives, specifically associated with equalizing student success to first-year and transfer students.

The Climbing and Challenge Course Coordinator reports to the ALI Operations Manager, and provides development, administrative, supervisory, professional, and technical support to Dixon Climbing Center, the McAlexander Fieldhouse Climbing Center, and the ALI Challenge Course, staff and participants. The main focus of their work will be providing operational and program coordination, instruction, training, and student development.

The coordinator has experience supervising a climbing center and/or challenge course, and possess instructor-level skills and certifications in one or more of the following areas: indoor rock-climbing, outdoor rock-climbing, group facilitation, and challenge course operations.

This position develops and maintains collaborative working relationships with other administrative professionals in the department and university community to complete projects with department-wide impact, to balance seasonal workloads and to ensure consistency in policy and procedure.

This position supports the coordinated efforts of the ALI that develop leadership skills and competencies of its employees including instruction in area such as: challenge course facilitation, rock climbing, wilderness medicine, whitewater sports, alpine mountaineering and wilderness living techniques.

Key Responsibilities
Climbing Center Programming (40%)
  • Coordinates climbing facilities in Dixon Recreation Center and McAlexander Fieldhouse. Supervises student employees in the operation, supervision, maintenance, and general upkeep of the climbing facilities, and climbing equipment.
  • Hires, fires, responds to grievances, disciplines, rewards, plans, assigns, and approves work, and prepares and signs appraisals or reviews for student, temporary and volunteer staff.
  • Ensures industry standards are maintained and stays current on climbing center technology developments and changes; develops, implements, and oversees risk management policies and procedures.
  • Provides onsite leadership and administration for programs and facility rentals.
  • Leads staff trainings, coordinates ongoing education initiatives, and develops opportunities for outreach in the climbing community, and external to OSU. Provides supervision to the facility and staff during operational hours.
  • Instructs and manages curriculum for indoor climbing skills courses, which include but are not limited to Efficient Climber’s Toolbox, Self-Rescue, Lead Climbing in the Gym, Professional Climbing Instructor Association (PCIA) Climbing Wall Instructor (CWI) course.
  • Coordinates with ALI Operations Manager on climbing center needs, scheduling, and other academic requirements.
  • Assists ALI Operations Manager in preparing annual budget for climbing center operations.
  • Instruct additional ALI courses as needed.


Challenge Course Programming (40%)
  • Coordinates the ALI Challenge Course operations and programs. Supervises student employees in the operation, supervision, maintenance, and general upkeep of the challenge course facilities, and challenge course equipment. Coordinates supervision and facilitating during operational hours.
  • Coordinates facility maintenance and general upkeep of ALI Challenge Course.
  • Develops and delivers ongoing education initiatives and develops opportunities for outreach in the campus and surrounding community.
  • Hires, fires, responds to grievances, disciplines, rewards, plans, assigns, and approves work, and prepares and signs appraisals or reviews for student, temporary and volunteer staff.
  • Ensures industry standards are maintained and stays current on challenge course technology developments and changes; develops, implements, and oversees risk management policies and procedures.
  • Instructs challenge course low and high course staff trainings, group facilitation trainings, and challenge course experience classes.
  • Coordinates with Recreational Sports Marketing and Communications area to grow awareness of the programs and services of challenge course to recruit groups and participants to generate revenue.
  • Supervises student, volunteer and temporary staff associated with class and training delivery.
  • Assists ALI Operations Manager in preparing annual budget for Challenge Course operations.
  • Coordinates with ALI Operations Manager on course needs, scheduling, and other academic requirements.

Program Development (15%)
  • Develops curriculum and instructs non-credit courses, skill development clinics and other activities for ALI. Supervises and mentors practicums, internships, and other experiential learning opportunities within the program, including but not limited to ALI students and participants.
  • Leads experiential rock-climbing trips with participants, must be able to move or carry equipment including but not limited to rock climbing/challenge course equipment and ropes.
  • Maintains a good understanding and working knowledge of outdoor recreation industry standard practices through professional development opportunities including regional and national conferences, certifications, workshops, clinics, and site-visits.
  • Works with ALI Area staff to assess and develop programming, courses, trips, and goals for the Adventure Leadership Institute and the Leadership Certificate.
  • Participates in the development of ALI area long term and short-term strategic planning in areas of programs, personnel, department policies, budgets, and facilities and risk management.

Department Responsibilities, Professional Development and Other Duties (5%)
  • Participate in the development of department strategic planning in areas of program, personnel, department policies, budgets, and risk management.
  • Represents Recreational Sports at division, university, and community levels in areas such as, committee work, program development and community engagement. Pursues professional development opportunities.
  • Promote and advance the Department of Recreational Sports through participation in university and organization meetings, committees, work teams, and activities.
  • Duties and responsibilities of the position include evenings, overnight and weekends.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
What You Will Need
  • Bachelor’s degree in management, recreation, human sciences, public health, business, education, communications or related field.
  • One year experience providing supervision or lead work in a climbing facility, challenge course, or equivalent experience.
  • Demonstrated experience, knowledge, and ability to instruct one or more of the following courses: rock climbing, group facilitation, low and high challenge ropes course utilization.
  • Climbing Wall Instructor Course [Professional Climbing Instructor Association] or the ability to obtain within six months of hire.
  • Association of Challenge Course Technology (ACCT) Level 1 or Level 2 or the ability to obtain within six months of hire.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion in adventure education, or equivalent.
  • Strong verbal communication skills, including clear instruction, writing skills, and attentive listening to communicate effectively and efficiently with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, collaboratively in cross-functional teams, be resourceful and take initiative in a fast-paced environment.
  • Certification in CPR with AED, Standard First Aid and Blood Borne Pathogens/Universal Precautions within 90 days of hire.

This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030. 
What We Would Like You to Have
  • Master’s Degree
  • Progressive professional experience in the operation of climbing and/or challenge course facilities.
  • Training in leadership development utilizing adventure pursuits.
  • Certification in Climbing Wall Instructor Course Provider [Professional Climbing Instructor Association].
  • Certification in Association of Challenge Course Technology (ACCT) Level 1 or Level 2.
  • Demonstrable commitment to student development through teaching and employment.
  • Previous experience teaching collegiate courses/programs, or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated experience, knowledge, and ability to safely travel in remote and exposed wilderness terrain.
  • Demonstrated experience in skills including, but not limited to rock climbing, wilderness survival, wilderness medicine, facilitation, and low and high course elements.
  • Experience preparing and managing budgets.
Working Conditions / Work Schedule
  • This position works in the environmental elements of indoor and outdoor climbing and challenge course facilities including but not limited to high and low ropes course, rock climbing locations in the outdoor environment, indoor climbing walls and bouldering, inclement and seasonal weather conditions, and an office environment. This position may enter spaces that are considered confined spaces and require safety equipment.
  • Flexible hours are necessary to engage with staff and participants with night and weekend work required. May need to adjust schedule to accommodate special events and staffing needs.
  • The work of this position is primarily located in Corvallis, OR. Most elements of this role require in-person attendance. Recreation center setting that requires a person to demonstrate and be active in the training of student employees onsite.
  • The employee in the position may be required to lift, carry, push and pull objects weighing up to 50 pounds.

Starting salary within the salary range will be commensurate with skills, education, and experience. The anticipated starting salary will be $51,000-$56,000.
