Job Title: Regional Trail Stewardship Coordinator

Supervisor: Regional Representative

F.L.S.A.: Non-exempt

 

Summary: The Regional Trail Stewardship Coordinator (RTSC) has strong outreach, organization, trail maintenance, and leadership skills to enhance and grow the PCTA’s regional volunteer trail maintenance programs to reduce deferred maintenance backlog on the PCT.

This is a year-round, full-time position with a furlough over the months of December and January, currently funded for a two-year term. Field work in the Spring and Fall will take place in the Tehachapi and Mojave regions. Summer projects will be hosted in the Sierra Nevada. Outreach and coordination efforts will be ongoing throughout the year.

Salary:
Starting hourly wage will range between $24-$25 an hour. A relocation stipend is available for candidates needing to relocate to the region.

This position:

  • Centers and implements diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) strategies in their project planning and execution.
  • Works closely with staff, volunteer leaders, corps crew partners, and agency partners to provide professional project coordination and management, logistical support, and project leadership in the office and the field.
  • Works in coordination with volunteer program staff to recruit volunteers and foster greater partnerships and regional stewardship collaboration between local agencies, municipalities, and community organizations.
  • Coordinates, provides support for, and instructs at Trail Skills College training courses.
  • Supports programs focused on growing PCTA’s volunteer program and developing a diverse, inclusive, and equitable volunteer community.

 

Essential Job Functions and Tasks:
Community Engagement

  • Conduct engagement to prospective volunteers, supporters, communities and groups to further the development and enhancement of PCTA’s community-based volunteer programs
  • Develop and foster relationships with volunteers to ensure they are adequately supported, both in and out of the field
  • Develop and foster relationships with program partners to ensure ongoing communication and effective programming with local land managers, including federal, state, county, municipal, and local partners
  • Assist in the development and implementation of volunteer stewardship and training programs
  • Support engagement efforts in expanding audiences in rural and racially diverse communities
  • Develop communications about the volunteer program and project accomplishments
  • Manage accurate data and records to create and distribute reports


Project Coordination and Leadership

  • Facilitate project and training planning and related communications with land managers, volunteer leaders, and other partner organizations
  • Manage project-related logistics and paperwork requirements
  • Facilitate pre-and-post project volunteer communications for projects
  • Provide on-site project leadership and manage base camp and trail project logistics for backcountry and front country projects. This may include:
    • Serving as the crew leader
    • Menu planning and food purchasing
    • Overseeing base camp cooking and chore rotation
    • Coordinating and facilitating supply loads for transport by animal packers
  • Train and supervise volunteers in trail maintenance, rehabilitation, and construction skills
  • Work with the volunteer program to support local volunteer crew leader development
  • Ensure all work meets PCTA and agency standards while adhering to all safety and environmental protocols
  • Conduct trail assessments to catalog trail maintenance needs

 

Other Duties

  • Oversee the inventory and maintenance of tools, camp supplies, and storage caches
  • Lead or assist with events and volunteer meetings
  • Provide administrative support (data entry, report preparation, and mailings) for various assigned teams and projects
  • Perform related duties as required to support and strengthen the mission and purpose of PCTA

 

Experience and Qualifications:

Required

  • Minimum of two years of relevant professional experience or five years of substantial volunteer experience in a field that involves conservation, trail maintenance, ecological restoration, landscaping, or other outdoor stewardship projects
  • Outdoor leadership in training, managing, and leading trail crews
  • Embraces diversity, equity, and inclusion as a personal value
  • Knowledgeable about Leave No Trace principles and tactics
  • Technical trail maintenance, rehabilitation, and construction skills
  • Ability to maintain a safe working environment in the field
  • Experience recruiting, coordinating, teaching, and managing volunteers
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to effectively build relationships and interact with people from diverse cultural, socioeconomic, and ethnic backgrounds
  • Ability to listen, learn, give and take feedback
  • Ability to adapt to changing conditions
  • Ability to communicate inclusively and effectively in writing, on the phone, and in person
  • Strong time management and detailed organizational skills with the ability to take initiative and produce results with minimal supervision
  • Proficiency using a computer, Microsoft Office, Outlook, and databases; comfortable learning new technology systems as needed
     

Desirable:

  • Chain and crosscut saw certification or skillset to enable certification before leading a project
  • Valid wilderness first aid, including CPR certification, or ability to complete certifications before the employee’s first managed project

 

Physical Requirements:

  • Comfortable working in front and backcountry settings, at high elevations, and in inclement weather
  • Ability to lift 25 pounds
  • Ability to work at a computer for several hours at a time
  • Ability to travel, including hiking and backpacking on and off trail for several days at a time
  • Ability to perform manual trail work
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to drive personal or rented vehicles
     

Typical Working Conditions and Travel:

The Regional Trail Stewardship Coordinator works under the direct supervision of the Regional Representative in the project area. This position works from a satellite office located within the region. They are expected to prioritize their work to meet the day-to-day demands and ongoing assignments. They are expected to communicate regularly on work projects. Regular overnight travel is to be expected, as is an irregular work schedule that will include weekend and evening work. Extended backcountry travel is to be expected. PCTA covers travel expenses.

 

Equipment Used:

  • Typical office equipment including a laptop computer, necessary computer peripherals, and other standard office equipment
  • Standard trail tools including hand tools such as Pulaskis, McLeods, pick mattocks, rock bars, sledgehammers, and shovels
  • Advanced tools including crosscut and chain saws, power tools, and rigging systems
