Position Summary
PeopleForBikes is hiring a Director of People and Operations to help advance our culture and effective nonprofit. The role is essential to fostering a high-performing, people-first organization, ensuring seamless operations, and strong team culture. Reporting to the CEO and president, the director will lead a team of three driving initiatives that support our staff and organizational efficiency.
The preferred location is near one of PeopleForBikes’ offices in Boulder, Colorado, or Bentonville, Arkansas, but candidates who can work remotely and travel to Boulder regularly and across the U.S. will also be considered. Candidates should possess an entrepreneurial and creative mindset, be self-motivated, and be comfortable working independently.
Responsibilities
Operations Management

Set and execute clear priorities, goals, and strategies to advance the organization’s team culture and operational goals.

Work with the CMO and CEO to manage annual workplan creation and quarterly OKR check-in meetings, ensuring our vision and core values are integrated into everything we do.

Run organizational best practices to maintain and improve systems.

Assist the CEO and fractional finance team on reporting, audits, compliance, policies, benefits, and budgeting.

Oversee our IT operations contractor, assist the team with all technology tools, and oversee database direction and management.

Manage and support a team of three including our people and operations manager, executive assistant to the CEO, and senior manager of philanthropy - being a strong thought partner.

Direct and manage cost-cutting initiatives, addressing organizational gaps and driving high impact projects forward.

Oversee office building facility operations.
Human Resources

Maintain relationships with brokers for healthcare and benefits.

Maintain and update insurance liability, worker's compensation, and other policies, including the annual review of policies.

Survey the staff on benefits annually and recommend yearly benefits plan changes.

Ensure the employee handbook and policies are implemented and updated regularly.

Run the talent management lifecycle including recruitment, developing job descriptions with internal postings, training hiring managers, and comprehensive onboarding and offboarding.

Coordinate the bi-annual review process: Compile information, advise on promotion pathing and pay assessment, and ensure performance review best practices are engaged.

Manage HR contractors and run performance improvement plans.
People and Culture

Maintain and update retention strategies, including assisting with operational health index surveys, providing professional development frameworks, and implementing our vision through a best-in-class workplace culture.

Advise internal team members who run in-person all-staff meetings, virtual staff meetings, and cultural and professional development events.

Enhance internal communications and employee engagement to deliver transparent updates.

Manage or advise cross-functional teams (culture, inclusion, sustainability, development, directors).

5+ years of working in nonprofit operations.

2+ years managing other people.

Proficiency in clear and concise writing, with the skill to distill complex public policy language into accessible terms for non-experts.

Willingness to travel for meetings, conferences, trainings, and site visits.

Commitment to safe, healthy, reliable, and affordable access to bicycling for all.

Knowledge about and passion for bicycling.

Our office is ADA-accessible. This role will require the use of a laptop for several hours; the ability to lift and move packages, tents, tables, and other event-related materials; and the ability to travel.
Desired Qualifications

Experience managing the back end of databases, ideally Salesforce.

Experience running internal DEI initiatives.

Familiarity with Google Suite and Apple products.

Proficiency in Excel.

Familiarity with project management tools, like Asana.

Experience with financial tracking software, like ADP.

Experience with managing employee benefit plans.
Compensation and Benefits
This “at-will” position offers a competitive salary commensurate with experience. The salary range will be decided based on the applicant selected, with a range of $85,000 to $95,000.
